If intelligence is the highest human faculty, why do the powerful so often triumph over the intelligent?
Jonas Salk - Polio Vaccine
In 1955 Salk developed the first effective Polio vaccine. Polio had been paralyzing or killing hundreds of thousands of children every year. When a journalist asked him: Who owns the patent?
Salk famously replied: "Well, the people, I would say. There is no patent. Could you patent the sun?"
Estimated lost personal revenue: billions of dollars. But the vaccine spread rapidly worldwide and saved millions of lives.
Albert Sabin - Oral Polio Vaccine
Sabin developed the oral polio vaccine, which replaced Salk's injection in most of the world. He also didn't patent it. Because it could be produced cheaply, it became the backbone of global polio eradication campaigns.
Alexander Fleming - Penicillin
He discovered Penicillin in 1928 and never patented it. Fleming believed antibiotics were a discovery of nature, not an invention that someone could morally claim to own.
Nikola Tesla - AC Power System
Tesla did hold some patents early on, but he repeatedly gave up enormous potential wealth. Most famously he released royalties owed to him by George Westinghouse for the alternating current system. If he had enforced the contract, he would have become one of the richest men in history.
Instead he allowed the AC electrical system to spread.
Norman Borlaug - Green Revolution Wheat
Borlaug developed high-yield wheat varieties that triggered the Green Revolution, preventing mass famine in Asia and Latin America. He never attempted to patent the seeds. His work saved an estimated hundreds of millions to a billion people from starvation.
John von Neumann - Computer Architecture
The basic structure used by almost every computer today-the stored-program architecture-came from von Neumann's design for early computers. He refused to patent the architecture, believing computing should advance through open scientific exchange. This allowed the rapid development of modern computers.
Many of these people shared a similar belief: Certain discoveries are too fundamental to belong to anyone.
This ethos was common in mid-20th-century science and is much rarer today.
THE INSULIN STORY
The discovery of Insulin occurred in 1921 at the University of Toronto.
The key researchers were: Frederick Banting and Charles Best. They were later assisted by James Collip and John J. R. Macleod
Before insulin, a diagnosis of diabetes—especially in young people—was almost a death sentence. Patients were often kept alive briefly on starvation diets, but they usually died within months or a few years. When Banting and Best succeeded in isolating insulin and treating the first patients in 1922, it was considered one of the greatest medical breakthroughs of the century.
Here is the extraordinary part about the patent: Instead of keeping the rights, Banting, Best, and Collip sold the patent to the University of Toronto for one dollar each. They believed no one should profit from a discovery that saves lives.
Their intention was simply to ensure that insulin could be manufactured safely and distributed as widely as possible. In Banting’s own words, insulin belonged to the world, not to him.
The irony: Today insulin is a multi-billion-dollar global market dominated by a small number of pharmaceutical companies.
Prices in some countries—especially the United States—have become extremely high, creating one of the most controversial ethical debates in modern medicine.
Many historians point out the irony: The people who discovered insulin tried deliberately to prevent exactly that situation.
Brief Evolution of the Internet and the World Wide Web
1960s — The Internet begins: The first computer network, ARPANET, is created in the United States by the Advanced Research Projects Agency to connect research universities to allow scientists to exchange data between computers.
1970s–1980s — Expansion of the network: The network becomes known as the Internet, a global network of interconnected computers.
1989–1991 — Birth of the Web: At CERN, physicist Tim Berners-Lee invents the World Wide Web, introducing three key elements: HTML (documents), HTTP (communication protocol), URLs (addresses for information)
1993 — A decisive choice: CERN releases the Web technology royalty-free, allowing anyone to build websites and browsers without paying licensing fees. Had it been patented, the internet might have evolved as a closed corporate network instead of a universal system.
Mid-1990s onward — Global expansion: The Web (1991) expanded the idea of free information. The Web spreads rapidly across the world. Commercial companies, search engines, and online services grow on top of the open infrastructure.
Commercialization changed the ecosystem after about 1995–2000.
Three forces transformed the web: Advertising models, companies realized they could make money from web traffic. Corporate platforms; Large companies built centralized services (Google, Facebook, Amazon, etc.). Data monetization: User behavior itself became a product.
The internet shifted from a knowledge commons toward a commercial ecosystem.
We see now how many pivotal technologies began with people driven more by curiosity and vision than by immediate profit. Later, entire industries grew around those ideas.
The pattern repeats itself again and again: knowledge first, ownership later.
Without the generosity—or perhaps simply the intellectual integrity—of people like Fleming and Berners-Lee, our world might look very different.
In an age increasingly dominated by patents, subscriptions, and digital tollbooths, it is worth remembering that some of the most transformative ideas in modern history began as gifts.
And civilization itself may depend, from time to time, on individuals who decide that certain discoveries belong not to them, but to all of us.
