Sympodial Orchids (Oncidium, Bulbophyllum, Brassavola, Cymbidium, Paphiopedilum, and many others)

Produce a series of connected growths along a creeping rhizome. Many develop pseudobulbs that act as reservoirs of water and nutrients, allowing the plant to survive periods of drought.

Monopodial Orchids (Phalaenopsis, Vanda, etc.)

Develop from a single growing tip that continues to elongate throughout the life of the plant. They generally lack pseudobulbs and rely on their fleshy leaves and roots to store moisture.
